A vital force in the Minneapolis music scene with reach far beyond it, the Laurels String Quartet has supported stars including Father John Misty, Semisonic, and Ondara but have never stepped out as headliners themselves. This March, that changes! The Laurels will host a five-week residency at Berlin, joined by a rotating cast of exceptional artists from their creative orbit.

This evening, Laurels String Quartet and Aby Wolf will further develop their electric collaboration of voice and strings. The quartet will also be joined by multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Eric Mayson in a genre-bending performance that blurs the lines between indie and chamber music.

Doors for the first set will open at 5:30 p.m., while doors for the second set will open at 7:45 p.m.

After a chance meeting over a decade ago, the Laurels String Quartet quickly became a staple of the Minneapolis music scene. Their collective instinct for tuning into the emotional frequency of a song has amassed the group collaborators near and far. Artists such as Belle & Sebastian, Father John Misty, Lucius, jeremy messersmith, Macklemore, Dan Wilson, Jason Mraz, Rogue Valley, Motion City Soundtrack, the New Standards, and Ondara have sought their company on stage and in the studio. The quartet has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, PBS, The Current, and NPR and has performed on stages across the country, from the celebrated outdoor festival Rock The Garden at the Walker Art Center to the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn, NY.

Aby Wolf grew up in the Driftless Region of northwestern Illinois, honing her ear for harmonies by singing while her mother practiced Erik Satie piano songs. At the age of 19, Wolf moved to Minneapolis and began collaborating with musicians across a spectrum of hip-hop, neo-soul, weirdo electronic improv, rock, jazz, and classical crossover. Whether she is writing vocal arrangements; fulfilling commissions; or performing in clubs, theaters, and schools everywhere from Brainerd to Bratislava to Beijing, she brings an elastic skillset and a palpable element of joy to whatever endeavor she pursues. A lifelong learner with an ever-expanding curiosity, Wolf has a sound distinguished not by typical markers of genre or instrumentation, but by her impressive range of expression and experimentation.

Composer, collaborator, and multi-instrumentalist Eric Mayson has an insatiable curiosity that pulls him in many directions. He works with theaters, dance companies, bands, and orchestras, and he loves playing Dungeons & Dragons and reading history. In 2019, he began training in aviation, and he is currently working as a flight instructor at Mankato Regional Airport.
