The Early Planets, formed by Minneapolis based guitarist and composer Mike Wolter, performs original works that are informed by a wide range of musical styles and approaches to composition and improvisation. Influences for the group include the music of Thelonious Monk, Marc Ribot, Jeff Parker, Neil Young, Parliament-Funkadelic, Ornette Coleman, Gilberto Gil, and Duke Ellington. Their debut album, The Waits / inBetween Music, was released on Shifting Paradigm Records in 2024.

Guitarist/composer Mike Wolter works with musicians from both the preeminent vanguard and the eclectic fringe. He has become one of the Twin Cities’ most sought-after guitarists and bandleaders. In 2021, Wolter’s interest in the intersection of music and social change inspired him to repurpose a sizable grant he received from the St. Paul Arts Board for showcasing his music to include — and unite — the varied musical acts from around town he admired while also raising several thousand dollars for local nonprofits working to better the community.
Cory Healey conjures sound from the drums by any means necessary. He studied music at Northern Illinois University and the University of Northern Iowa. While living in Chicago, Healey performed and recorded with Algernon (Cuneiform Records), W.W. Lowman, Fareed Haque’s Flat Earth Ensemble, The Jennifer Hartswick Band, Van Ghost and Ike Riley. After relocating to Minnesota in 2013, Healey emerged as a an active member of the Twin Cities jazz and improvised music scene, playing drums for Erik Fratzke’s Fake Accent, Adam Linz’s Le Percheron, Bryan and The Haggards, and his own Beautiful Sunshine Band, which released their debut record on Shifting Paradigm Records in 2016. Healey has also performed and/or recorded with Six Families, Anthony Cox, Mark Mallman, Erik Koskinen, Dead Man Winter, Marijuana Deathsquads, the Immigration Orchestra, and Dosh.
Cody McKinney is a bassist, composer, improviser, and sound artist residing in the Twin Cities. He has been actively composing, recording, and performing since the mid-1990s. Some of McKinney’s recent works have been recorded by his contemporary trio, Bloodline.
