Early Evening Jazz: Yazmin & Beat Zero

NO COVER 4:30pm Show

On both Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20, pianist/vocalist Yazmin Bowers, bassist Álvaro Benavides, and drummer Andrew Gillespie will perform two sets of original and traditional Cuban-inspired material over the dinner hour. We’re celebrating Cuban music with CAYO all weekend long.

Band Members:
Yazmin Bowers - Piano/Vocals
Álvaro Benavides - Bass
Andrew Gillespie - Drums

A powerful singer-songwriter and pianist, Yazmin Bowers weaves heartfelt lyrics with Cuban-influenced sounds shaped by years of study in Havana and deep musical roots from childhood. Her performances are emotionally rich, moving effortlessly from tender ballads to bold, percussive piano lines. Along with her bandmates—Grammy-nominated bassist Álvaro Benavides, from New York City, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Gillespie, from Minneapolis, MN—she creates a riveting new fusion of Latin jazz, funk, and folk rock.

Originally from Northern Wisconsin, Yazmin grew up surrounded by music; both her parents were professional musicians. At 13, she encountered Cuban music for the first time, which led her to develop a lifelong, rich, heartfelt connection with this country and its culture. In 2023, Yazmin & Beat Zero joined forces with the Havana Quartet; their new record, due out in 2026, will feature the quartet on several songs.
