The Havana Quartet promotes the music of contemporary Cuban composers and the Cuban diaspora with an infectious, dynamic energy. Recently relocated to the Twin Cities from Havana, the quartet brings the spirit and sounds of their homeland to schools, community centers, and performing arts venues around the Twin Cities metro as part of their artist residency with the Cuban American Youth Orchestra (CAYO), a Minneapolis-based international nonprofit that connects the people of the United States and Cuba through music.
The Havana Quartet made their debut for the 30th anniversary of the Havana Contemporary Music Festival in 2017 and were soon awarded Best Interpretation of Cuban Music in the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba chamber music competition. They have premiered and recorded contemporary Cuban works in major halls throughout Cuba, Europe, and the United States. Through a long association with CAYO, they have presented masterclasses to students from Cuba and the United States and performed at the residence of the U.S. ambassador in Havana. They also performed at the 2019 Cubadisco festival, celebrating the 500th anniversary of Havana, and appeared as guest artists at the Minnesota Orchestra International Day of Music in 2023 and 2024.
The Havana Quartet is currently enrolled in an artist residency program with several area organizations, interacting with diverse audiences through a repertoire of works from Western classical music, Afro-Cuban jazz, and contemporary Cuban concert music.
