Experimental group IE curates Sunday nights at Berlin this October, bringing new artists into the fold each week.
For Week 2, IE welcomes Little Obsessions, the umbrella moniker for the polymathic creativity of Mara Appel Des Lauriers. Behind her Yamaha PSR keyboard, Mara constructs burbling melodies and lyrical vulnerability, channeling baroque psychedelia through synth-pop aesthetics.
Then, 1980s Seattle underground veterans LXD merge Lori Eschler’s cinematic sensibility (as pianist, cellist, and a former collaborator of David Lynch's) with the scrappy guitar and tape loop textures by Dale Flattum (of Steel Pole Bath Tub and Novex). The result is what they call a “soundtrack to reconnection.”

Emerging from the network of experimental and drone-oriented music scenes in the Twin Cities, IE (pronounced “eee”) is a band devoted to experiences of hypnotic minimalism. From stark experiments in meditative drone music to lilting and groove-based psychedelia, IE have built their own language of atmosphere, repetition, and hypnosis over nine years of recording and touring. In their live performances, they experiment with sustained tones, electronic whirrs and beats, video and film projections, and metaphysical recitations. The current lineup is keyboardist Michael Gallope (Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, New Pope, Oneida), singer/bassist/flutist Mariel Oliveira (XOXO Tech), guitarist/percussionist Sam Molstad (Material, Orchard Thief), guitarist/keyboardist Travis Workman, and drummer Meredith Gill.
IE have toured widely across North America, with recent performances at Big Ears Festival, Roulette (Brooklyn, NY), Zebulon (Los Angeles), Constellation and Elastic Arts (Chicago), Milwaukee Psych Fest, Drone Not Drones (Minneapolis), and Mississippi Studios (Portland, OR). The band has released three cassettes of minimal drone music (Shinkoyo, MJMJ); a recording of Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study No. 2 live at the Cedar Cultural Center (Drone Not Drones); and three full-length albums: Pome (Moon Glyph/ISH), Junk Body (Shinkoyo/ISH), and Reverse Earth (Quindi Records). A fourth full-length album, also on Quindi, is currently in progress.
