Paul Hecht’s Lost Highway brings together three distinctive improvisers for an evening of music inspired by David Lynch’s visual and aural worlds.
Pianist and composer Paul Hecht has two wide-ranging recordings with his Chicago-based Pyrography ensemble. Lost Highway extends his interest in traditional song forms, atmospherics, minimalist, trance, and looping music, as well as musical narratives that buck traditional expectations. Here, the musicians explore a Lynchian ur-narrative that doubles as an American story on perpetual repeat: hometowns and main streets, innocent loves, sinister presences, investigations, repressed histories, and possible originary violences to be faced and owned. Along the way, they embrace noir aesthetics, camp, and kitsch, finding room for the ridiculous alongside an unflinching search for truth.

The Nunnery is a looping vocalist/sound artist with a longtime following in the Twin Cities. Her most recent recording, Ascending, embraces traditional song forms next to extended fantasias, sometimes collaborating with other musicians, sometimes spun entirely from her own voice.

Caroline Davis, a distinctive and critically acclaimed alto saxophonist, comes to Berlin from New York in the midst of a solo tour from her recent recording Fallows. Davis is a prolific composer and performer who regularly bridges diverse scenes from modern jazz to experimental music and beyond.

Drew “D” Valle goes by D. Untethered, a moniker that speaks to not having strong familial traditions or cultural roots. Originally from Ohio and moving to Minnesota in 2010, D. grew up listening to hip-hop, funk, R&B, soul, and jazz. A discerning selector, D. brings that same sense of openness to the decks, moving fluidly across rhythms and tempos rather than settling into one particular lane.
