Experimental group IE curates Sunday nights this October, bringing new artists into the fold each week. For this residency opener, ambient musicians John Marks and Crystal Myslajek will create an otherworldly duo of fractured vocals and sampled landscapes. Then, they’ll lead a psychedelic drone journey featuring members of IE.

Crystal Myslajek is a multi-instrumentalist, sound artist, and collaborator. She explores deep listening, the embodiment of sound, and connection through music. Inspired by minimalism; improvisation; field recordings; and pop, post-classical, jazz, and ambient musics, she creates emotive dreamscapes and songs with spectral vocal loops and textural piano sketches.

John Marks is a Minneapolis-based artist and organizer working with experimental moving image, performance, and sound. He is a member of Mirror Lab, a studio collective and programming space in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of South Minneapolis.

Emerging from the network of experimental and drone-oriented music scenes in the Twin Cities, IE (pronounced “eee”) is a band devoted to experiences of hypnotic minimalism. From stark experiments in meditative drone music to lilting and groove-based psychedelia, IE have built their own language of atmosphere, repetition, and hypnosis over nine years of recording and touring. In their live performances, they experiment with sustained tones, electronic whirrs and beats, video and film projections, and metaphysical recitations. The current lineup is keyboardist Michael Gallope (Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, New Pope, Oneida), singer/bassist/flutist Mariel Oliveira (XOXO Tech), guitarist/percussionist Sam Molstad (Material, Orchard Thief), guitarist/keyboardist Travis Workman, and drummer Meredith Gill.
IE have toured widely across North America, with recent performances at Big Ears Festival (Knoxville, TN), Roulette (Brooklyn, NY), Zebulon (Los Angeles), Constellation and Elastic Arts (Chicago), Milwaukee Psych Fest, Drone Not Drones (Minneapolis), and Mississippi Studios (Portland, OR). The band has released three cassettes of minimal drone music (Shinkoyo, MJMJ); a recording of Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study No. 2 live at the Cedar Cultural Center (Drone Not Drones); and three full-length albums: Pome (Moon Glyph/ISH), Junk Body (Shinkoyo/ISH), and Reverse Earth (Quindi Records). A fourth full-length album, also on Quindi, is currently in progress.
