⊹
Minneapolis multi-instrumentalist and engineer Charlie Bruber may not be known primarily as a singer-songwriter, but with the release of his second solo album, Prized Burden, that is likely to change. Channelling the tenderness and poetry of giants like John Martyn and Nick Drake, Bruber reflects on loss, acceptance, and memory itself over 14 mellow, stunningly crafted folk-rock anthems. The results fit comfortably alongside the work of Martin Courtney and Ryley Walker, but this highly personal record wholly belongs to Bruber.
Prized Burden is a journal entry—one that Bruber intended to capture the past few years of his life and the attendant emotional ecosystem. Bruber began writing the songs on Prized Burden while on his honeymoon in Northern New Mexico. The album bears traces of not only the sweet celebration but also the cold desert nights, wondrous falling stars, and unfamiliar fauna. "When the sun sets in the desert, Bruber says, "we are reminded of the depths of life and a greater timeline, well beyond the human timeline." Also, Bruber's father was put into memory care just ahead of the semination of the record. There is a comfort in the sound of Prized Burden, something familiar and warm, something reassuring in the evident care taken. However, the existential reeling at the center of these songs is profound—vertiginous.
Bruber's history of playing on and engineering work by folks including Cole Pulice, Jack Barrett, Kevin Gastonguay, Lynn Avery, and PaviElle French—as well as performing, writing, and producing in his own groups Charlie.Murphy, Society of Chemists, and Black Market Brass—have certainly informed the precision and sonic expertise here. But it is only living and listening that can help one stitch together songs like these. With Prized Burden, Bruber shows that he can run with his contemporaries and the spirits of his heroes: those who chronicle the human experience.

Charlie Bruber (Society of Chemists, TABAH, Black Market Brass) started studying music using the Suzuki piano method but fell in love with electric bass as a 13-year-old after hearing Metallica bassist Cliff Burton's work on “(Anesthesia) — Pulling Teeth.” He released his first solo album, Finding the Muse, in 2023. He has also played on, engineered and/or produced albums and songs by his friends PaviElle French, Kevin Gastonguay, Cole Pulice, Lynn Avery, Murphy Janssen, and Jack Barrett at his studio, 8vB.
