“Here’s what audiences remember from an Arias show: his gentility, no matter how raucous his humor, and his love.”
— Hilton Als, The New Yorker
⊹
Joey Arias is a legendary performance artist who has pushed the boundaries of music, fashion, art and queer culture across a career spanning more than five decades. He first broke into the wider culture singing backup alongside Klaus Nomi for David Bowie’s 1979 Saturday Night Live performance. Since then his path has run through Andy Warhol and Thierry Mugler, a film career ranging from To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar to Big Top Pee-wee, and originating the role of the emcee in Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity in Las Vegas. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, Harvard University acquired his archives in 2019. Arias is just off a four-month run of Arias with a Twist, his musical collaboration with puppeteer Basil Twist, at HERE Arts Center in New York. This show marks the debut of Angels Sing on High, his new Christmas album for Beige Records, arranged with Zachary McMillan, Eliot Douglass and Ben Allison.
