Percussionist Jason Marsalis will perform two lively sets of music by Ellis Marsalis, Brian Wilson, and more with a Twin Cities–rooted band.

Jason Marsalis is a talented percussionist from jazz’s most famous family. He was born in 1977 in New Orleans, LA to Ellis and Dolores Marsalis, the youngest brother to Branford, Wynton, Ellis III, Delfeayo, and Mboya. He started playing violin at age 5 with the Suzuki teaching method, and at age 6, he started playing the drums. When he was just 14, he made his recording debut on Delfeayo’s album Pontius Pilate’s Decision.
As a senior in high school, Marsalis joined pianist Marcus Roberts’ trio. Marsalis would go on to record several albums with Roberts, including Portraits in Blue — a recasting of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue — and a collaboration with conductor Seiji Ozawa and the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1998, Marsalis recorded his debut album as a leader, Year of the Drummer, while co-leading the popular Los Hombres Calientes band in New Orleans. A few years later, Marsalis turned his attention to the vibraphone and recorded In a World of Mallets, his first full album on the vibraphone.
Marsalis has recorded or performed with a who’s who of musicians, including Joe Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Curtis Fuller, John Ellis, John Scofield, Bruce Hornsby, and Snarky Puppy. He has taught music classes and workshops at the New School; Florida State University; and his alma mater, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
