Early Evening Jazz: Jackson Churchill Trio

Freshly appointed as the jazz ensembles director at Gustavus Adolphus College, trombonist Jackson Churchill makes his Minneapolis debut at Berlin. Joined by Twin Cities staples Chris Olson and Matt Peterson, Churchill will perform original compositions and standards that showcase both the sensitive and exciting aspects of the trio format.

Jackson Churchill gives thorough meaning to the term “working musician.” He currently serves as visiting instructor and jazz ensembles director at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. His performance credits include the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Christian McBride’s JAS Academy Big Band, and the Broadway tour of “The Wiz.” As a full-time high school band director living in the midwestern United States, he has won international jazz trombone competitions facilitated by the International Trombone Association, American Trombone Workshop, and Jazz Trombone Day.

During Churchill’s tenure at Valley High School in West Des Moines, IA, the program received distinctions from such organizations as Bands of America, the Iowa Jazz Championships, and the National Band Association. While in Iowa, he was also a Teaching Artist of Jazz Trombone at Drake University in Des Moines.

Churchill completed his master’s degree at the University of North Texas, where he studied with acclaimed artist Nick Finzer and played in the One O’Clock Lab Band. Before that, Churchill graduated summa cum laude from Luther College, where he was a Theodore Presser Music Scholar. He was a proud recipient of the Des Moines Community Jazz Center’s 2025 Next Generation Award.
