Big Blue Moon is a modern jazz piano trio from south Minneapolis. The group programs a set list of bandleader Nick Bhalla's originals; jazz standards; and improvisational interpretations of favorite tunes from the ‘60s and ‘70s, including Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Nick Drake. In a split second, this trio can turn from beautifully arranged sections into free-form group improvisation.

Nick Bhalla is highly active in the Minneapolis music scene, contributing to projects including Dusty Forever, Harlow, Neopolitan, Steady Range, and his trio Big Blue Moon. Nick’s newest album, Empire, is a suite of explorations for solo piano, with plenty of room for improvisation and surprising harmonic twists. Nick’s solo piano provides meditative soundscapes drawn from a deeply improvisational spirit. Revolutionary yet calming—expansive yet introspective—it is the perfect music for entering a fresh mindset.
