Acclaimed trumpeter and composer Adam O’Farrill introduces ELEPHANT, his first quartet as the sole horn voice, with a self-titled debut released this year via Out of Your Head Records.

ELEPHANT unites four rising New York–based musicians: O’Farrill, pianist Yvonne Rogers, bassist Walter Stinson, and drummer Russell Holzman. Rogers combines deep study with fearless spontaneity; Stinson balances consummate fundamentals with elastic, expressive musicianship; and Holzman—an old friend of O’Farrill’s from LaGuardia High School—melds natural swing with high-precision, electronic-rooted rhythms and a finely tuned sense of dynamics.

ELEPHANT draws from a wide constellation of musical influences—post-bop, electronic music, classical minimalism, Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood’s film scores, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and more—absorbed organically rather than as overt crossover gestures. The album’s centerpiece, The Sea Triptych, reflects water’s comfort and mystery across three pieces, from the crashing textures of “Along the Malecon” to the ambient meditation “The Three of Us, Floating” and the percussive, groove-driven “Iris Murdoch.” Elsewhere, the quartet’s striking reinvention of Sakamoto’s “Bibo No Aozora” replaces strings with trumpet, delay, and electronic harmony without sacrificing the instrument’s essential voice.

ELEPHANT captures O’Farrill fully inhabiting his moment—confident, curious, and unafraid to let contemporary influences reshape the language of modern jazz on his own terms.

Widely regarded as one of the most vital musicians of his generation, Adam O’Farrill has been hailed by the New York Times as “among the leading trumpeters in jazz” and “perhaps the music’s next major improviser.” At just 31, he has earned deep respect across the jazz community for his staggering technique, emotional insight, and cultural breadth. In 2025 alone, O’Farrill appeared on acclaimed recordings including Mary Halvorson’s About Ghosts, Hiromi’s Out There, Tarun Balani’s Kadahin Milandaasin, and his own Out of Your Head Records octet release For These Streets. His résumé also includes collaborations with Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber, Mulatu Astatke, Mali Obomsawin, and Micah Thomas, placing him firmly among the most critically lauded artists shaping 21st-century improvised music.

Russell Holzman is a drummer, producer, and creator born and raised in New York City. Coming from a family of musicians, he received formal musical training at LaGuardia High School and New England Conservatory of Music, building a dynamic foundation across jazz, classical, and contemporary music. He tours and records extensively with artists including Caroline Polachek and has worked with pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz and electronic music producers such as Mike Dean, A.G. Cook, Fred again.., Bicep, David Sitek, and Steven Wilson. His drum videos have amassed tens of millions of views on social media, earning him a large following and lasting influence in the drumming community. Russell Holzman plays A&F drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans drumheads, Vic Firth drumsticks, and Gibraltar hardware.

Yvonne Rogers is a pianist, composer, and multimedia artist from Maine who is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Described as a "fresh, new voice on piano" (Paul Acquaro, The Free Jazz Collective), she is in demand as both a sideperson and bandleader in New York and beyond. She has performed at venues and festivals including the Jazz Gallery, Roulette Intermedium, the Blue Note, and NYC Winter Jazz Fest with artists including Ralph Alessi, Linda May Han Oh, Ingrid Laubrock, and Sara Serpa. Rogers is a 2024 Next Jazz Legacy Awardee and holds accolades including the 2025 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency and the 2024 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award from ASCAP. She is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. Currently, she leads her own quartet and performs with Ingrid Laubrock’s Lilith and Adam O’Farrill’s ELEPHANT. Her debut album, Seeds (2023, Relative Pitch Records), and solo piano release The Button Jar (2026, Pyroclastic Records) are available on all streaming platforms.

Walter Stinson is a bassist, educator, and composer based between Brooklyn and Montréal. After graduating from Purchase College in 2012, he moved to New York City, where he has been working steadily ever since. Some of his most frequent collaborators include Adam O’Farrill, Kevin Sun, Max Light and Aaron Quinn. He has shared stages all over the world with Billy Hart, John Hollenbeck, Caroline Davis, Kenny Werner, Roy Nathanson, Arturo O’Farrill, Anna Webber, David Binney, and Jean-Michel Pilc. Stinson, pianist Evan Main, and drummer Steven Crammer released their piano trio Prawntail’s self-titled debut album on Endectomorph Records in 2025.
