Logan Richardson: A Living Score

$25 (General Admission)
6:30pm & 8:30pm Shows (Ticketed Separately)

Illustrious saxophonist Logan Richardson makes Minneapolis his laboratory this July.

Part concert, part installation, and part social practice, Richardson’s A Living Score residency unfolds as a creative process where sound, breath, movement, place, and human interaction become compositional materials. Each day informs the next.

At the center of A Living Score is Richardson, whose saxophone, voice, electronics, field recordings, film, and live composition techniques create a framework that is both structured and open. Key creative voices Kevin Washington, Kavyesh Kaviraj, and Omar Abdulkarim join Richardson for each installment. Lauded bassist Melvin Gibbs lends his presence on Thursday and Friday nights.

Witness the birth of new music and the embrace of an entire city.

Saxophonist Logan Richardson hails from St. Louis, MO, a city with a rich historical lineage of improvised music. At 19 years old, Richardson left for Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. Then, he moved to New York City to attend the New School University. In NYC, Richardson began performing, recording, and touring internationally with artists including Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, Butch Morris, Greg Osby, Stefon Harris, and Jason Moran. Richardson has released two prior albums as a leader—2007’s Cerebral Flow (Fresh Sound, New Talent) and 2008’s Ethos (Inner Circle Music). He was part of NEXT Collective, which released the album Cover Art (Concord Jazz) in 2013. In 2016, Richardson released his Blue Note Records debut, Shift, which features an impressive band of visionaries including guitarist Pat Metheny, pianist Jason Moran, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Nasheet Waits.

Omar Abdulkarim’s journey reflects a dedication to his art. He has been playing the trumpet since he was 14 months old. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. He has shared the stage with Roy Hargrove, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE, and Talib Kweli, and he has written and recorded music with Lauryn Hill and Jose James. His influences include Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, John Coltrane, and Lee Morgan.

Melvin Gibbs is a Grammy-nominated composer, musician, and writer born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Time Out New York once wrote that he was "the greatest bassist in the world,” and JazzTimes rated him No. 1 Electric Bassist in its 2019 Critics Poll. His first book, How Black Music Took Over The World, was published by Basic Books in April 2026. Gibbs’s diverse musical background includes mentorship by Ornette Coleman and Gil Evans; stints in Defunkt and the Rollins Band; collaborations in ensembles including Power Tools alongside Bill Frisell and Ronald Shannon Jackson, the cooperative Harriet Tubman, and the band Body Meπa; as well as work with Arto Lindsay, dead prez, Caetano Veloso, DJ Logic, David Byrne, Eddie Palmieri, and Sonny Sharrock.

Kavyesh Kaviraj is a critically acclaimed composer, arranger and pianist living in Minnesota. He has worked with several internationally renowned artists, including Wynton Marsalis, David Sanchez, Justin Robinson, Roosevelt Collier, and Steve Cole. He earned a Master of Music degree from Berklee College’s Global Jazz Institute and instructs students at North Star Jazz Workshops.

One of the Twin Cities’ most versatile musicians, drummer Kevin Washington makes jazz for the future, often incorporating other genres, from Afro-Latin music to hip-hop and R&B beats. The son of saxophonist Donald Washington and singer Faye Washington, he grew up in Detroit immersed in learning music and listening to the jazz greats who came before him. Since moving to the Twin Cities in his teens, Washington continues to capture the spirit of African and African American music while making it his own. He is a drumming instructor at Walker West Music Academy and works with the student jazz ensembles.
