LANI B. SUPREME is an internationally performing American musician, sound artist, and educator who plays with the practice and concept of lineage as a portal into past and future. Transmuting the tension between tradition and improvisation that is the philosophical foundation of Black American music, LANI B. creates sound installations, original compositions, and film and podcast scores that propel his audience into a bright future made possible by merging honor for and transgression of tradition.

The great-great-grandson of 19th-century cornetist and music educator Professor J.B. Humphrey and the grandson of Emery Humphrey Thompson—also known as Umar Sharif, who performed with such musicians as Ella Fitzgerald, Fletcher Henderson, and Lionel Hampton—Bauman began his classical training at age 13 with the trumpet, under the tutelage of Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s Ronald Benko. He studied with Alvin Batiste (Cannonball Adderley, Billy Cobham, Wynton Marsalis) at the renowned New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), before completing his bachelor’s degree at Berklee College of Music and a Master of Music in jazz studies at Michigan State University. This artistic genealogy has equipped him to carve a singularly contemporary sound.

LANI B. has performed and presented at venues, festivals, and museums in Europe, the Middle East, North America, and South America, including the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Domaine Forget Jazz Festival in Quebec, the Detroit International Jazz Festival, Jazz a la Calle in Uruguay, the Jazz Standard in New York City, Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and St. Regis Hotel in Doha, Qatar. He is a recipient of a National Foundation in the Advancement for the Arts Regional Award for Jazz Trumpeter in the State of New York and an alumnus of the Banff Centre Jazz Workshop.

Dan Carpel attended Berklee College of Music, where he was in the school’s Monterey Quartet. He was a member of Jason Palmer’s band throughout his time in town, and was a mainstay in their residency at Wally’s Jazz Cafe. His time out east also notably included playing in groups led by Godwin Louis, Noah Preminger, and Melissa Aldana. Since relocating to the Twin Cities, Carpel has regularly worked with Javi Santiago, Zacc Harris, and Omar Abdulkarim. He frequently performed with singer/guitarist Mary Cutrufello as well as Sonny Knight and the Lakers, and he recently became a part of Dylan Hicks’s Small Screens.

Miguel Hurtado is a professional drummer and educator based in the Midwest. Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, he started drumming at age 10 while attending Ramsey International Fine Arts Center. By age 14, he was playing gigs with youth jazz groups and local professional musicians. Hurtado attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a BFA in jazz performance. Since returning to the Twin Cities, he has established himself as an important member of the rich hip-hop, jazz, and experimental music scenes. His musical versatility has allowed him to collaborate with artists across many genres of music, including West African, Latin, funk, pop, and gospel, as well as collaborations in the visual arts. Hurtado can be seen playing at venues across the Midwest with such artists as Lady Midnight, the Ted Olsen Quartet, Your Smith, and the Minneapolis String Project.

Ethan Ostrow is a Minneapolis-based pianist, composer, and singer with a background in jazz and improvised music. His music ranges from soaring melodies over head-banging grooves to powerful reflective ballads. Ostrow’s compositions are “dynamic, passionate, and gorgeous” (East Bay Express), incorporating rock, funk, and folk elements into a modern jazz aesthetic.

Ostrow has performed extensively across the United States and abroad in Havana and Tokyo. Having recently relocated to Minnesota from New York City, he frequently performed at venues such as Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, Chelsea Table & Stage, Nublu, and Rockwood Music Hall with musicians such as Dayna Stephens and Kellin Hanas. Ostrow is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, having been mentored by Stefon Harris, Ingrid Jensen, Jaleel Shaw, and Phil Markowitz.
