Early Evening Jazz: Slack / Peterson / Haneman

NO COVER 4:30pm Show

An obedient member of many bands, and yet a guitarist who often can’t resist misbehaving, Evan Slack—or just “Slack”—has played locally since high school. After recording an in-studio session at The Current and playing First Avenue’s Best New Bands of 2012 as part of Bomba de Luz (fronted by Lydia Liza), Slack moved to New York, where he studied with the late great Vic Juris and fretboard wizard Oz Noy. He returned to Minneapolis soon enough, and his current music families include HEYARLO and Purple Funk Metropolis. He has also performed and/or recorded with Lupin, Marijuana Deathsquads, FPA, Sid Sriram, Kinfu, Papa Mbye, Lambchop, Cole Davis, and Your Smith in recent years.

Trevor Peterson is a Twin Cities–based bassist whose fretless bass work balances groove with fearless exploration. Known for heavy, driving basslines and vocal-like phrasing, Peterson treats the bass as both an anchor and atmosphere, moving effortlessly between foundational low-end power and expressive melodic improvisation. Peterson has worked with local artists such as King Pari, Eric Mayson, Zak Khan, FPA, Charlie Bruber, Tahiti, and Nathan Barlow.

Rick Haneman is a Minneapolis-based drummer, music educator, and creative known for his dynamic touch and intuitive interplay on the drums. Equally comfortable in tightly structured grooves and open improvisational settings, he approaches the drum set as both a rhythmic engine and a textural instrument. Haneman is best known for his work in local band HEYARLO.
